Criterion Games is a video games developer founded in 1993 that is based in Guildford, England. The company is famous for its Burnout racing game series. Electronic Arts acquired Criterion Games and the rights to the Renderware game engine in 2004. After that, the company shortly released its only first person shooter game - Black.

Criterion Games announced at E3 2010 that they were producing a new Need for Speed title set for release at the end of 2010. They said it to be inspired by the first NFS title - The Need for Speed.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) was released at the end of 2010 and is the first Need for Speed title released by the developer.

Criterion Games announced at E3 2012 that they were producing a new Need for Speed title set for release at the end of 2012. The new title is a reboot of the 2005 NFS title - Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) was released at the end of 2012 and is the second Need for Speed title that was released by the developer.

On June 22nd, 2012 EA announced that Criterion Games will take over the NFS franchise.
