The 1997 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is a racing car developed by the performance and motorsport division; Mercedes-AMG.

Mercedes-Benz only created 25 road going examples between 1998 to 1999 that retains the instrumentation, front design, and four headlamps from the standard production CLK.

It competed in the 1997 FIA GT championship season, which necessitated production of a derivative road model. The racing model was replaced by the V8 powered CLK LM in 1998.[4]

Games[]

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit[]

The CLK GTR appears in Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit as a class A car. It is unlocked after beating the Tournament mode in Expert difficulty.

It is one of the fastest cars due to its well-rounded performance comprising of precise handling, strong acceleration, and a high top speed.

In the PC release, it cannot be used in Hot Pursuit mode.

Description

It can sometimes take years to develop a series-winning racecar, but not for the AMG engineers who developed the sensational Mercedes CLK-GTR.

From the initial go-ahead by Mercedes-Benz to serious track testing, it took 128 days, an astonishing feat considering the complexity of today's racing cars for international competition. The AMG Mercedes racing team is rightly proud of this achievement, especially since the CLK-GTR won the tough international FIA GT series in its debut season.

The CLK-GTR, based on Mercedes’ elegant new CLK coupe, uses an advanced carbon-fiber lightweight monocoque. Powerplant is a six liter V12, similar to the one used in Mercedes’ S-Class luxury sedan, but tuned to produce a thundering 600 horsepower. Top speed is in excess of 200 miles per hour.

Immense cornering power is aided by double wishbone suspension, front and rear. Formula One style carbon-fiber vented disc brakes keep the rapid CLK-GTR under control.

Few race cars have been developed as quickly as this one, and even fewer have been as successful right out of the gate.

Need for Speed: High Stakes[]

The CLK-GTR appears in Need for Speed: High Stakes as a class AAA car and can be purchased for $500,000 in the career mode. It cannot be used in Hot Pursuit mode.

It has similar performance traits as it has in Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit. It can hit a higher top speed than the McLaren F1 GTR at the expense of slower cornering speeds.

Description

Not many race cars dominate their first season of competition the way the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR did, but low-slung stylish racer won the closely fought FIA GT Championship first time out in 1997 despite tough competition.

The GTR is based on Mercedes’ sleek new CLK road-going coupe, but uses a high-tech carbon-fiber body and a 6 liter, 600 horsepower Mercedes V12 engine similar to that used in the famed German automaker’s flagship S-Class sedan.

Perhaps it's no surprise that Mercedes was so successful with its new race car - the company has a history of competition laurels that goes all the way back to the very first Benz automobiles of the turn of the century. Mercedes dominated Grand Prix racing in the 1930s, and again in the 1950s. Today the fabled Stuttgart company still leads the way with winning engines for Formula One and kart race cars.

A direct descendant of those great Mercedes racers of the past, the CLK-GTR boasts many leading-edge technological features, including carbon fiber vented disc brakes similar to those used on Grand Prix cars. Safety is also a critical consideration, and the CLK-GTR is one of the very few race cars fitted with life-saving airbags.
