Motor City Online

From Need for Speed Wiki

Motor City Online

Motor City Online was a free game online racing game produced by Electronic Arts. It was launched on the 10th of October 2001. The game was originally planned as part of the Need For Speed series. Had it been released as a Need For Speed game, it would have been called 'Need For Speed : Motor City'. As it was released as an online only game, all of the single player elements were removed. The game featured some Role Playing Game elements; such as levelling up after winning races.

[edit] Game Demise

EA Games eventually took the game servers offline on the 29th of August 2003. The problems with the game were that it lagged, and the number of subscribers dropped below 36,000. During times of high latency, cars acted unpredictably due to lag. EA was focusing on their other online game, The Sims Online. Users who were still playing the game at this time were offered access to Earth & Beyond, The Sims Online or Ultima Online.

[edit] Game Goal

The goal of Motor City Online was to purchase a range of different American muscle cars. Cars ranged from the 1930's to the 1970's. Cars could be modified. If you modified a car, it had another suffix added to the name; eg. Ford Ranchero Chopped. Older vehicles were available as convertibles, and some of the cars wer available only in the form of bodies. The game also offered special paint jobs that were incredibly hard to get.

[edit] Foreign Cars

At the end of Motor City Online's run, there were two non American cars in the game. The two cars were the 1997 Toyota Supra, and the other was the 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Both cars were outfitted with V8 engines.
