Multiplayer, also presented as Hot Pursuit Online in-game, is the online multiplayer and matchmaking component of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010).

Players can access multiplayer from the main menu of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) and is open from the beginning of the game.

Upon accessing multiplayer, players can choose to join friends, create a private session, join a quick match, or view friends recommendations.

Joining a multiplayer lobby for an event will highlight the game mode, event route, performance series, weather conditions, time of day, route distance, current players, and the players participating for either faction. Once a session is locked, players will move to a car selection menu limited to a specific performance tier and faction specific cars.

Players can earn bounty as they continue along the event route of any multiplayer session, and additional bounty is awarded based on their performance at the end of the session. The amount rewarded is based on the player's performance, the total number of participating players in that session, and the winning faction of the event.

Join Friends[]

Join Friends allows players to view their friends list via Autolog and can choose to join friends in sessions with open slots or invite friends to a friends only game lobby.

Players can also view their friends Autolog statistics from this menu.

Create Friends Game[]

Create Friends Game allows players to set up custom game lobbies with their own selection of game mode, event, and players.

Within this section, players can also choose to make their lobby either 'invite only', which will require invites to sent to players before they can join; 'friends only', which will only allow players on the friends list of a player in the lobby to join; and 'public', which opens up the server to all players.

The host of the lobby can change the game mode, event locations, and teams. They will need to back out and host a new session to change the performance series.

Quick Match[]

Quick Match is public matchmaking and will find an open slot in a lobby aligning to the player's choice of game mode.

Through Quick Match, players are given the option to choose their preferred game mode and performance series. If a suitable match can not be found, matchmaking will prioritise the game mode ahead of the player's selected performance series, and join an open slot of any game mode if no match can be found.

Friend Recommendations[]

Friend Recommendations will suggest friends of friends to add to a player's Autolog friends list.

Game Modes[]

In multiplayer, there are five available game modes; three included with the release of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010), and two included as part of the Armed and Dangerous pack.

Hot Pursuit[]

Hot Pursuit is made up of two teams with up to eight total players for a cops and racers session.

The starting grid of a hot pursuit session is arranged with racers having a lower racer wanted level placed closer to the front of the pack and higher bounty rank racers being placed nearer the pursing cops. Higher SCPD Cop Rank cops are placed closer to the pack of racers and lower rank cops are placed nearer back.

  • Cops have to bust all racers before any of them reach the finish line.
    • Cops only win if all racers are busted without allowing any of them to reach the finish line.
  • Racers have to reach the finish line without being busted by the cops or wrecking.
    • Participating racers are competing against each other as they race to the finish line.
    • Cops lose if any racers reach the finish line, but racer rewards are based upon their finishing position.

Interceptor[]

Interceptor is made up of two teams requiring two players for a cops and racers session.

The starting grid of an interceptor session is arranged with the racer ahead of the pursing cop, and once the opening vignette has finished, both are allowed to free-roam Seacrest County throughout the duration of the session.

The engagement range, shown as a red and blue alternating circle on the mini-map, highlights the area in which the cop is in pursuit of a racer. A racer leaving that circle will enter 'cooldown', and will have to remain undetected by the cop for 30 seconds to escape. Cops can re-engage with the racer suspect if they can get their vehicle within range again before the racer can escape through cooldown.

Either participant can also win by wrecking their opponent.

Race[]

Race is made up to eight total players in a single racer-only session.

The starting grid of a race is arranged with racers having a lower wanted level placed closer to the front and higher wanted level racers being placed nearer the back. Players are not given equipment.

Players compete against each other with the winner being the first to reach the finish line.

Most Wanted[]

Most Wanted is included with the Armed and Dangerous pack. It is made up of two teams with up to eight total players for a cops and racers session.

The starting grid of a most wanted session is arranged with racers having a lower wanted level placed closer to the front of the pack and higher wanted level racers being placed nearer the pursing cops. Higher SCPD Cop Rank cops are placed closer to the pack of racers and lower rank cops are placed nearer back. Both teams are allowed to free-roam Seacrest County throughout the duration of the session.

The 'Most Wanted' racer is highlighted as the session starts. They are shown with a green name in the player list and with a green arrow on the mini-map.

The cop and racer teams compete against each other with either having different goals for success:

  • The Most Wanted racer has to escape the engagement range of all cops or wreck all cops.
  • Racers have to protect the Most Wanted racer from the cops or wreck all cops.
  • Cops have to bust the Most Wanted racer by either depleting their damage meter or pinning them against a unit.

Arms Race[]

Arms Race is included with the Armed and Dangerous pack, and is made up to eight total players in a single racer-only session.

The starting grid of a race is arranged with racers having a lower wanted level placed closer to the front and higher wanted level racers being placed nearer the back.

All racers are given racer equipment to use against each other, as well as Roadblocks and Police Helicopters being deployed randomly throughout the session. Players have to survive each other and the SCPD whilst they race against each other to the finish line.

The winner is the first racer to reach the finish line or the racer the was closest to finishing should all participants wreck.
