Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is the 6th game in the Need for Speed series. It was first released on October 1st, 2002 for the Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube and October 22nd, 2002 for the PC. There are differences between the 4 versions of the game the Xbox, Gamecube, and PC versions were developed by EA of Seattle while the PS2 version was developed by Black Box.

The cars differ models and details in the different versions like in the PS2 version the Mercedes CLK-GTR is a Racing version like in Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit and Need for Speed: High Stakes with the street version's rims, while Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions of the car is the Street version and the Ferrari 360 Spider's NFS counterpart in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions is the NFS Ferrari 360 Spider while the PS2 version gets the Ferrari 360 Modena (challenge version) instead. Also the PS2 version gets 5 police cars while the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions gets 9 police cars. In the PS2 version the police cars can be unlocked to be used in Challenge modes while the Gamecube/Xbox versions do not however with the PC version the skin and police equipment can be enabled by as another car skin expect for the Crown Victoria if its enabled as a skin00 model the player will chase the AI suspect driving the car or race an AI racer in races who drive it instead. Cars from Need for Speed II, Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit and Need for Speed: High Stakes that return are the McLaren F1, Ferrari F50, Mercedes CLK-GTR, Jaguar XKR, and BMW M5 while the 996 Porsche 911 Turbo from Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed returns.

The tracks are mostly the same expect with some different details in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC and PS2 versions. Also the PS2 version has 3 tracks that are not available in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions they are desert based. The PS2 version also has weathered versions of all the tracks a feature that the Gamecube/Xbox and PC versions lack. Also all versions have circuit and point to point based tracks as well in addition to forward, mirrored, and reverse versions of all tracks.

[edit] Playstation 2 Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions Differences

  • The Police cars in all 4 versions have different markings, the PS2 version of the police cars have antennas on the roof of 4 out of the police cars, while the Crown Victoria in Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions is the only police car with a antenna and unlike its PS2, box art and intro counterparts is it on the trunk of the car instead of the roof, the Crown Victoria gets push bumpers on the front bumper and the other pursuit cars in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions while the PS2 versions lack these pieces of police equipment. The light bars in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions have 7 strobes while the light bars in the PS2 version have 6 strobes. The Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions of the light bars are generic light bars while the ones from the PS2 version appear to be based on the Code 3 MX series light bars.
  • The PS2 version has a boost feature that the AI Police and players could use while its absent in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions.
  • The PS2 version has a feature that allows players to switch the gender of the driver while this feature does not exist Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions.
  • During the busted cut scenes in the PS2 version they are shown in black and white like if it were a real police camera similar to Most Wanted, Carbon and Undercover while in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions they are in color. In the PS2 version one cop is seen arresting the player while in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions more than one cop are present along with police dogs.
  • Players while playing as the cops can accidentally damage the tires on their police cruisers when driving over spike strips and lose points for it in the PS2 version while in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions the tires are unaffected.
  • The police helicopter in the PS2 version is a Hughes 500D in a gunship configuration similar to the military AH-6 and fires rockets at the player in the game during the pursuits while in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions it is a Bell 206BIII Jet Ranger. In 4 four versions they both drop barrels that explode and capable of sending both speeders and cops flying. In the PS2 version sometimes the barrels have spike strips inside in a attempt to stop the players.
  • When driving the police cars in challenge mode outside of "You're the Cop" mode in the PS2 version the cops will call it a borrowed police cruiser, black and white or patrol car sometimes while in the PC version when enabling the Pursuit Crown Victoria to be chased or driven by the AI racers in races in addition to the cops calling the Crown Victoria by these names like in the PS2 version they will also say stolen police cruiser, black and white or patrol car. When enabling the pursuit versions of the other cars to be driven outside of "Be the Cop" mode the cops will call the car by its real name.
  • The NFS edition cars have different schemes in 4 four versions while one NFS edition car is a separate model in the PS2 version and that is the Ferrari 360 Modena (challenge version).
  • The CLK-GTR in the PS2 version is the racing version with the street version's rims and the CLK-GTR in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions is the street version.
  • The Desert Heat, Outback, Rocky Canyons tracks are executive to the PS2 version and do not exist in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions.
  • The sirens can be turned on the police cars in the PS2 version outside of you're the cop mode while the PC version the sirens can only be turned on in be the cop mode.
  • The headlights in the PS2 version are turned on during races while the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions lack this feature even.
  • In the PS2 version the police cars expect for the Corvette Z06 like in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions have flashing headlights while this is absent from the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions.
  • The PS2 version uses letters in the alphabet for its car classes and the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions uses numerals for its car classes.
  • Different cops are seen driving the police cars and arresting the player when racing as a street racer or arresting AI suspects in busted cut scenes on the follow tracks are: A obese cop in a blue uniform for the wooded area and tropical based tracks and a State trooper for the desert, and Mediterranean and alpine tracks. While a generic cop driver drives all the police cars in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions.
  • There are 5 police cars in the PS2 version while there are 9 in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions.
  • While playing as the cops in the PS2 version players can only call for a spike strip/roadblock or help from helicopters and no backup which only the AI cops can do while in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions players and can not only call for a spike strip/roadblock or help from helicopters they can also call for backup similar to the PSX version of High Stakes just like the AI cops.
  • Players playing as the cops in the PS2 version will appear near the starting line after the race starts while in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions after the race starts the AI suspect appears in front of the player cops.
  • The music that is heard at the menus can be switched on and off to be heard in races in the PS2 version but not in the Gamecube and Xbox versions while the PC version the existing song has be to replaced in order menu music to be heard during races.
  • The cops speaking over the loud speaker speech in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions are taken from Need for Speed III from the PSX and demo for the PC version.
  • The first two siren sounds are new while the third one is taken from the PSX version of High Stakes in the PS2 version while in the Gamecube/Xbox/PC versions the American police siren sounds are taken from the PC versions of Need for Speed III and High Stakes. Also the High Stakes German, French and British/Australian police sirens are present in the siren.bnk file for the PC version but aren't used though.

  • This game marks the last appearance of cars from Ferrari because of the expiration of contract and the expensive exploitation cost of the said manufacturer.
