Single Player

The standard Short Gears modification is unlocked in single player through the completion of a specific event that differs per vehicle.

The professional modification is unlocked upon the player earning a total of 25 Near Misses with Short Gears equipped.

The standard and professional variations of the Short Gears mod has to be unlocked individually for each vehicle in single player.

Multiplayer

The standard Short Gears modification is unlocked in multiplayer for a vehicle upon the player reaching a specific milestone for that vehicle.

Exotic Class	Drive 10 miles (16 kilometres) with the vehicle
Grand Tourer Class	Drive 25 miles (40 kilometres) with the vehicle
Muscle Class	Drive 200 miles (320 kilometres) with the vehicle
Race Class	Drive 100 miles (160 kilometres) with the vehicle
Sports Class	Drive 5 miles (8 kilometres) with the vehicle
SUV Class	Drive 5 miles (8 kilometres) with the vehicle

The professional modification is unlocked upon the player perform a 100 yards (91 metres) drift 160 times with the standard Short Gears mod equipped to any vehicle during SpeedLists.

The standard Short Gears mod has to be unlocked individually for each vehicle in multiplayer. The professional modification is unlocked for any vehicle that the player has met the requirements of the standard modification for.
