A Differential allows for the wheels receiving torque from the engine to rotate differently or spread available power across each tyre.
- Open - The torque produced by the engine is split evenly across tyres receiving power and each powered tyre can rotate at different rates. This type is commonly used for all cars as it allows powered wheels to rotate at different rates, but means power is sent to wheels that may not have any grip.
- Locked - The torque produced by the engine will transfer disproportionately between each tyre and each tyre will rotate at the same rate. It is commonly used for off-road traversal and drag racing as power is sent to tyres with grip, but reduces the vehicle's ability to turn.
- Slip - The torque produced by the engine will transfer disproportionately between each tyre and each tyre can rotate at different rates. The slip differential has various clutch pads that can lock up individual drive shafts.
