The Plymouth Road Runner is a muscle car built by the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation in the United States between 1968 and 1980. In 1968, the first muscle cars were, in the opinion of many, moving away from their roots as relatively cheap, fast cars as they gained options.

Although Plymouth already had a performance car with the GTX, designers decided to go back to the drawing board and reincarnate the original muscle car concept.

Plymouth wanted a car that would be able to complete a quarter mile in 14-second and sell for less than $3,000. Both goals were met and the low-cost muscle car hit the street.

The success of the Road Runner would far outpace the upscale and lower volume GTX, with which it was often confused.

Motor City Online

The Road Runner's first appearance was in Motor City Online.

Need for Speed: Carbon

The Plymouth Road Runner appears in Need for Speed: Carbon as a tier 2 muscle. It is unlocked upon reaching online XP level 8 and is playable for Quick Race use only. After unlock, players can select between an orange painted and Aftermarket parts fitted variant. It is also available in a Challenge Series canyon race.

The Plymouth Road Runner shares many handling characteristics of the other classic muscle cars as it has a powerful acceleration but lacks grip during hard cornering.

Need for Speed: ProStreet

The Road Runner appears in Need for Speed: ProStreet as a tier 2 vehicle with a price tag of $0. Players can obtain the car by applying patch 1.1.

The Road Runner reuses reuses its driving traits from Carbon. Its strongest trait is acceleration. Due to its soft suspension and front-biased weight distribution, the Road Runner requires a lot of braking to enter corners properly.

The player can use the Road Runner as a Drag car during the earlier portion of the career mode to outperform AI opponents, whom have less powerful cars during this stage. It can be also kept in later stages of the game as long as the player installs both performance and handling upgrades on their vehicle.

Need for Speed: World

Template:NFSWlink The Road Runner was added to Need for Speed: World on March 13rd, 2012 as a tier 2 car with a price tag of 1,500 SB. It is fitted with Amerikon Speedsystems street tuned parts as standard.

Need for Speed: World features the Road Runner as a competitive tier 1 car. It has a superior handling and nitrous boost to the Chevrolet Chevelle SS. The Road Runner can match against the majority of tier 1 cars and some vehicles from higher tiers but might be difficult to control in narrow roads. Players can reach 165 mph (265 kmh) as top speed and 134 mph (216 kmh) with stock performance.

Players can use the car effectively in every game mode. With performance upgrades better than that of the Race series, the Road Runner can beat much more powerful cars such as the Toyota MR2 GT-S.

  • The Road Runner is the longest playable vehicle in every Need for Speed instalment it has appeared in.
  • The Road Runner lacks its stock vinyls in Need for Speed: ProStreet.
  • A five-speed gearbox is used in Need for Speed: World as standard transmission.
